Revisiting Young Joni

Following copious amounts of Christmas shopping, my father and I were in need of revitalization. And nothing sounded better than a late lunch at Young Joni.

My father, an avid Pizzeria Lola fan, had never been. And, having not returned myself since my summer foray with Victoria, I thought it was perfect timing for a Young Joni meal.

Driving over the frigid Minnesota highways, we arrived in Northeast around 2pm. The atmosphere was jovial, with families buzzing throughout the restaurant, all home for the holidays. Little babies stumbled here and there, admiring the festive entryway christmas tree.

We snagged a corner at the community table, adorned with a festive arrangement. I opted in delight for their Lambrusco dell’Emilia Borgoleto and my father a glass of red. Nothing like sparkling red!!

We were totally overwhelmed by all the delicious options, but decided to start with a celery and endive salad and their chicory Caesar.

The salads were to die for, particularly the celery and endive creation. Lathered in creamy dressing, the crunchy and delightfully bitter celery cut nicely against the strong blue cheese. And, the highlight of the Caesar, of course, were the perfectly seasoned croutons.

Grilled whole fish.

For our mains, following the lead of our super friendly server, my father selected the grilled whole fish – that day a rainbow trout. Meanwhile, following my heart’s desire, I chose the Parisienne pizza, craving the soft ricotta and caramelized onion pairing.

The server cut the trout in front of us, expertly deboning the fish, and we eagerly dove into the filets. Fired in their wood powered oven, the trout featured perfectly crispy skin and tender, flavorful meat.

My pizza was not as good as I remembered, perhaps a little too much pickled mustard seeds for my taste, but the crust was still as delightful as ever.

We finished the meal with their to die for apple crisp served a la mode with vanilla soft serve and of course, coffee.

It was an amazing meal and my dad did not stop raving about it through New Years. We departed and headed home to wrap all of our presents.
